The voluntary student association “Tutors” contributed to the celebration of the 170th anniversary of the birth of the first director of the Polytechnic Institute, Andrey Grigorievich Gagarin.
Within the framework of the own project “Gagarin — 170”, participants of the association organized a series of events for foreign students of the preparatory department of SPbPU. First, a Russian conversational club was held: it helped listeners to delve deeper into the history of Polytechnic University and to get acquainted with the heritage of its first rector. Then tutors conducted an engaging overview excursion for the students of the Main building of the university with a visit to the Museum of the History of SPbPU.
The culmination of the project was an educational field seminar at the estate of Prince A. G. Gagarin in Kholomki. Foreign students were able to see original exhibits from the 19th century with their own eyes and experience the atmosphere of noble life: the historical interiors of the estate seemed to bring the pages of the past to life. At the conclusion, the participants honored the memory of the first director of the Polytechnic, laying flowers at his grave.
On the way from Porechye to Dno there is a majestic memorial erected in memory of the victims of fascism. It is located at the site of the ‘Dulag-100’ concentration camp, and the memorial is led by the ‘Alley of Sorrow’. At this symbolic place, the tutors planted a fir alley as a symbol of eternal memory of those who suffered at the hands of the Nazis.
“This year the community of tutors is celebrating its tenth anniversary, and this is an occasion to summarize the intermediate results of their work,”— considers the rector of SPbPU Andrey Rudskoy. —It should be said that a lot has been done, and the association has become a real guide to our culture, mentality, and way of life for foreign students of Polytech. Tutors acquaint the guys with the history of the university itself. Thus, on the 170th anniversary of Prince Gagarin, foreign students immersed themselves in the university’s heritage, visited Kholmki, took part in greening the memorial, and planting trees. And there are many such initiatives organized by the tutors.
“Tutors have been diligently working for ten years to make studying and living conditions for foreigners in our country, in the city, and at the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University more comfortable,” —noted the Vice-Rector for International Activities Dmitry Arseniev. —The projects they are implementing within the framework of celebrating the anniversary of the student public organization “Tutor Forses” are of great importance for strengthening the university’s prestige and represent a significant step forward for the team of tutors. This year, activists took under their wing foreign students of the preparatory faculty, organized a series of city tours, including to the exhibition center “Lenrezerv”, and participated in university events aimed at countering the ideology of terrorism and extremism.Symbolically, on the 170th anniversary of Andrey Gagarin, they organized excursions and thematic meetings for foreign students dedicated to the Gagarin family. On behalf of the international services of Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University and the hotel, they expressed gratitude to the tutors for their work and wished them success.
