The voluntary student association “Tutors” contributed to the celebration of the 170th anniversary of the birth of the first director of the Polytechnic Institute, Andrey Grigorievich Gagarin.
Within the framework of the own project “Gagarin — 170,” members of the association organized a series of events for international students of the preparatory department of SPbPU. First, there was a Russian conversational club: it helped the listeners to immerse themselves more deeply in the history of Politechnika and to get acquainted with the heritage of its first rector. Then the tutors conducted an engaging overview excursion for the students around the Main building of the university with a visit to the Museum of History of SPbPU.
The culmination of the project was an educational offsite seminar at the estate of Prince A. G. Gagarin in Kholomka. Foreign students were able to see authentic 19th-century exhibits firsthand and experience the atmosphere of noble life: the historical interiors of the estate seemed to bring the pages of the past to life. At the conclusion, the participants honored the memory of the first director of the Polytechnic by laying flowers at his grave.
On the way from Porechye to Dno, there is a majestic memorial erected in memory of the victims of fascism. It is located at the site of the concentration camp “Dulag-100”, and leading to the memorial itself is the “Alley of Sorrow”. At this iconic place, tutors have planted a spruce alley — as a symbol of eternal memory of those who suffered at the hands of the Nazis.
“This year, the community of tutors is celebrating a decade, and this is an occasion to sum up the interim results of the work,”— believes the rector of SPbPU Andrey Rudskoy. —It must be said that quite a lot has been done, and the association has become a true conduit of our culture, mentality, and way of life for foreign students of Politeh. The tutors acquaint the guys with the history of the university itself. Thus, on the 170th anniversary of Prince Gagarin, foreign students immersed themselves in the university’s heritage, went to Kholomki, took part in greening the memorial and planting trees. And so many initiatives organized by the tutors.
“For ten years, tutors have been diligently working to make studying and living for foreigners in our country, in the city, and at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University more comfortable,” —noted the Vice-Rector for International Activities Dmitry Arsenyev. —The projects they are implementing as part of the celebration of the decade of the student public organization “Tutor Force” have important significance for strengthening the university’s prestige and represent a big step forward for the team of tutors. This year, activists took foreign students of the preparatory faculty under their wing, organized a series of city excursions, including to the exhibition center “Lenreserve”, and participated in university events to counter the ideology of terrorism and extremism.Symbolically, on the 170th anniversary of Andrei Gagarin, they organized excursions and thematic meetings for foreign students dedicated to the Gagarin family.
