On June 4, students of the Department of Transport Systems and Road and Bridge Construction of SPbGASU, studying in the specialty “Construction of Unique Buildings and Structures” (SUZS) in the fourth and fifth years, as well as sixth-year graduates, visited the construction site of the Cimbalin road overpass with a professional excursion. The reconstruction of the facility is being carried out by JSC “PO ‘VOZROZHDENIE’.”
The Tsimbalin overpass connects Bely Kuna Street in the Frunzensky District and Tsimbalin Street in the Nevsky District of St. Petersburg. Although the project is called a reconstruction, it is actually a new construction. The existing two-lane arched overpass, built in 1910, will be completely dismantled, and two separate overpasses – left and right – will be constructed in its place.
The length of the new four-lane structure including the exits will be 975 meters, of which 450 meters will pass directly over the railway tracks. After the commissioning of the facility, its capacity will increase almost two and a half times – up to 24 thousand vehicles per day. In addition, a high-speed railway Moscow – St. Petersburg will pass under the overpass.
A graduate of SPbGASU of 2007, head of construction, conducted a tour for studentsDmitry Alexandrov.Participants visited the slipway where the assembly of the span structure took place and witnessed one of the most interesting stages of the work — the sliding of the left overpass span. The operation was carried out using two powerful horizontally acting jacks.
To reduce the sagging of the cantilevered part of the projecting span, the builders used a sprengel – a special cable-stayed system that provides additional support to the structure. The students were able to familiarize themselves in detail with the principles of its operation directly on the object.
Special interest was caused by the concreting process of the monolithic slab of the roadway of the steel-reinforced concrete span structure adjacent to the main overpass with a metal span structure and an orthotropic slab of the roadway.
The excursion allowed future engineers to get acquainted in real conditions with modern bridge construction technologies and the organization of work at one of the significant infrastructure facilities of the Northern capital.
A student shared her impressionsDarya Suvorova:“During the excursion, we were told about the Tsymbalinsky overpass itself, its features, as well as the construction structures and technologies used at the site. It was especially interesting to see live the structures of the span of the bridge, which we studied during the academic semester. We managed to observe the construction process itself. The most impressive was the sliding of the metal span structure of the overpass – we learned about the technology of its implementation and the devices used. Huge thanks for the opportunity to visit the bridge under construction!”
According to the participants, two hours at the construction site passed unnoticed and became a valuable addition to the theoretical training, allowing them to see the practical application of the studied engineering solutions.
