Mexico, June 16 /Sin Hua/ — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday expressed support for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), stating that if necessary, she is ready to discuss the benefits of the deal with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“This agreement benefits all three countries. The first agreement had its own problems for the United States. This second agreement was signed by President Trump himself,” said K. Sheinbaum during the daily press conference at the National Palace in Mexico.
In the course of the ongoing process to review the trade deal, Mexico hopes to reduce US tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles, said K. Sheinbaum, adding that she will pursue negotiations with D. Trump if this is necessary to achieve this goal.
“What is being proposed is a review. Why this law? Because it was approved by the Congress of the United States, by the Congress or Senate of Mexico, as well as by Canada,” she told journalists.
The Mexican delegation, headed by Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard, is working to ensure the continuity of the agreement’s implementation, she emphasized.
However, according to K. Shaynbaum, the more protectionist position of the US government has brought new problems to the ongoing negotiations.
The United States insists that North American goods be produced on U.S. territory, while “we say that this should be not only the United States, but the whole region, precisely because this is a free trade agreement,” she said.
Comments by K. Sheinbaum were made after D. Trump in recent days cast doubt on the extension of USMCA, stating that the United States does not need anything from Canada and Mexico.
