Yinchuan, June 15 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, on the eve of the 32nd World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, a high-level conference and a training course for senior officials and coordinators for cooperation in the field of desertification control between China and Central Asian countries were opened in the city of Yinchuan, the administrative center of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR), Northwest China.
The three-day event gathered over a hundred representatives from government bodies, universities, enterprises, and other organizations from China and Central Asian countries. Participants will conduct in-depth discussions and exchange experience on issues of joint technological innovations, creation of cross-border management models, and comprehensive development of industries with the specific characteristics of sandy terrain, as well as jointly develop ways of cooperation in the field of joint counteraction to regional desertification.
At the symposium held on Monday, experts from Central Asian countries successively presented the current situation in their countries in the field of combating land desertification and existing problems in this area.
In turn, leading Chinese experts presented advanced scientific achievements at the global and regional levels on such key issues as desertification prevention and combating it, soil erosion control, reclamation of saline lands, development of modern agriculture, as well as the application of new technologies and products for desertification prevention.
During two consecutive days, foreign guests attending the NHAL conference will familiarize themselves with the results of the comprehensive reclamation of the Mu-Us desert, industry development models characteristic of desert regions, such as the cultivation of goji berries and grapes for wine production, as well as the planning of environmentally friendly enterprises in the field of new energy sources. This will allow them to clearly see the development path of Ningsia, based on close interaction of measures to prevent and combat desertification, restore ecosystems, and develop “green” industries.
It is expected that at the conference in Samarkand, three local companies from the NHCAR will sign agreements with the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University (KazNAIU) and the Agency for Forestry and Increasing Green Zones, Combating Desertification, at the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, within the framework of which specific cooperation measures will be agreed upon in the areas of joint training of specialists, exchange of advanced technologies, and transfer of equipment as a donation.
Let us remind you that since the establishment in July 2025 of the NHAR Center for Cooperation in Combating the Desertification of the “China-Central Asia” format, interim results have been achieved in all areas of work. The creation of the center is one of the important steps in implementing the outcomes of the 2nd “China-Central Asia” summit and is intended to contribute to building the green “Belt and Road.”
Currently, the Cooperation Center, acting on one of the real needs of the Central Asian countries in the field of combating desertification, has developed three targeted, feasible, and applicable priority projects for combating desertification, which will be gradually implemented in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan over the course of the year.
This event was organized by the Forestry and Steppe Economy Department of the Ninsya-Huay Autonomous District and implemented by the Center for Cooperation on Combatting Desertification of the “China-Central Asia” format, under the leadership of the State Forestry and Steppe Economy Administration of the PRC.
