Beijing, June 12 /Xin Hua/ — China will continue to improve and enhance cooperation and interaction between the eastern and western regions of the country, ensuring full coverage with chief assistance programs, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the PRC Maierdan Mugaiti said at a press conference held by the Press Office of the State Council of the PRC on Thursday.
For decades, China has been implementing a program of chief assistance, within which wealthier eastern provinces and cities provide support to less developed western regions, offering financial, technical, and personnel assistance to promote more balanced development of the country.
Since its launch in 1996, the strategy of providing leadership assistance to those in need has played an important role in achieving victory in the fight against poverty, as well as in consolidating and expanding the results achieved, stated Mayerdan Mugaiti.
According to the ministry, within the framework of the program from 2021 to 2025, more than 750 billion yuan (about 110 billion USD) was invested by enterprises in the western regions of the country, which contributed to the formation and development of industrial clusters in these regions.
The program also helped to increase employment: over the same period, more than 5 million rural workers from western regions were employed.
Eastern regions have also increased purchases of specific agricultural products from western regions, while the eastern leading regions during the specified period purchased or facilitated the sale of agricultural products from western regions totaling nearly 570 billion yuan.
Looking ahead, the deputy minister noted that the ministry will maintain overall political stability without weakening efforts to provide chief assistance. He called for emphasizing the complementarity of advantages between the eastern and western regions of the country in order to facilitate cooperation and joint development. -0-
