The pier of Cziankou in the village of Pintan (near the city of Hengzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region) was an important salt pier in its history. The famous Chinese traveler Xu Xiake, having been here, recorded: “All Qinzhou salt is exported from here.” In the 1960s, due to the filling of the reservoirs of the Siczin Hydroelectric Power Station, the old street of Cziankou in the village of Pintan was flooded, and the residents relocated to a higher place, where they rebuilt the village and streets from scratch.
In August 2022, the official construction of the Pinlu Canal began. The Cziankou pier in Pintan, as the starting point of the canal, received a chance for development.
It is expected that the channel will be opened for navigation in September of this year. After that, ships will be able to turn here from the Yuydzian River to the south and go to the sea through the Baybu Gulf, which will shorten the route by 560 kilometers compared to the traditional eastern route.
A local resident of Wei Syaoyun, using the uniquely beautiful view of the river right from her house, opened a small restaurant. With the growth in the number of builders and tourists, her small business began to thrive.
On Tszyankou Street, one of the old buildings was converted into an exhibition hall, where the history of the old street and its miniature model are presented. Using such advantages as the status of the channel’s starting point, the millennial culture of the salt pier, and natural landscapes, the local government plans to actively develop the cultural tourism industry.
There are far deeper changes underway. If the Pinlu channel acts like a lever, then the port of Ziyankou in the village of Pintan serves as a fulcrum point, which will shift the channel towards the sea for the southwest and central-southern regions of China. Nanning—the administrative center of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region—is a city located along a river, but without direct access to the sea, and will turn into a strategic gateway connecting river and sea. The position of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the logistic system of China-ASEAN and in the overall structure of openness of the country’s western regions will be strengthened.
Many enterprises have already arrived here in advance with investments and industrial projects. In the new eastern urban district of Nanjing, industrial projects of companies such as BYD and Sun Paper are being implemented one after another. After the full commissioning, it is expected that the annual production volume will exceed 200 billion yuan. In the Liuzi industrial park, construction is underway for a smart base for the production of ships powered by new energy sources, which will produce about 70 vessels of various types per year. The main type will be “green” standard ships adapted for the Pinlu Canal.
