The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, strongly condemned the attack on the tanker Settebello, flying the flag of Palau, off the coast of Oman and expressed deep regret in connection with the consequences of the strike.
The incident occurred in the area of the Hormuz Strait. According to available reports, the ship was hit by a projectile, after which a fire broke out on board. As a result, three sailors died.
“I categorically condemn any actions by any party that threaten the lives of sailors and the safety of international shipping. This is absolutely unacceptable,” Dominguez stated.
The head of the IMO expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
He reminded about the convening of an extraordinary session of the IMO Council, whose participants emphasized the necessity of ensuring the protection of sailors, civilian vessels, and freedom of navigation under any circumstances.
“All actions affecting international shipping must fully comply with international law andrequirements for the safety of human life at sea. “The protection of sailors is a shared responsibility that must remain the foremost priority,” emphasized the Secretary-General.
The WHO reported that it continues to closely monitor the development of the situation and called for a full and transparent investigation of the circumstances of the incident.
