Vienna, June 11 /Xin Hua/ — The Iranian nuclear issue cannot be resolved through political confrontation; it can only be resolved by diplomatic efforts and cooperation in the area of guarantees and supervision, said China’s permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Li Sun on Wednesday.
The historical evolution of the Iranian nuclear issue, including the achievement and then the violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, fully demonstrates that the resolution of the issue lies in political and diplomatic settlement, as well as in promoting dialogue and cooperation, Li Sun stated on Wednesday in connection with the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors held this week to consider the Iranian nuclear issue.
According to him, it was precisely after the United States and the E3 countries /Great Britain, France, and Germany/ at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting in June last year insisted on resolving the Iranian nuclear issue, that Israel and the United States brazenly struck Iran’s nuclear facilities, which were under guarantees and supervision.
This year, a second strike was inflicted on Iran. This is the main reason why cooperation between Iran and the IAEA in the field of guarantees and supervision was forced to be suspended and has not yet been restored to normal operation, he added.
Li Sun emphasized that political confrontation in the IAEA Board will not solve the Iranian nuclear problem. Forcing the adoption of a resolution will only escalate the conflict, and submitting it for consideration by the UN Security Council will also not lead to a solution.
This issue can only be properly resolved through political and diplomatic efforts and cooperation in the area of guarantees and supervision within the framework of the IAEA, provided that full respect is given to Iran’s legal right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy as a participant of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, emphasized the Chinese diplomat. –0–
