The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Domingues, expressed growing concern regarding the fact that ships, according to reports, continue to pass through the Strait of Hormuz despite the lack of reliable safety guarantees and the emerging risks for the crews.
According to the head of the IMO, the situation in the region remains extremely unstable. At the same time, some vessels continue to transit through the strait, and recent incidents have led to deaths, injuries, and detentions of sailors.
“My main concern is the safety and lives of sailors who work in such conditions,” emphasized Dominguez. According to him, people should not be subjected to significant risks that are well known and cannot be sufficiently reduced.
The head of the IMO noted that under the current circumstances it is impossible to talk about the presence of conditions for safe navigation.
He reminded that the ship’s captain and the shipping company do not bear the primary responsibility for planning the voyage and conducting a comprehensive risk assessment in accordance with the current international safety and shipping requirements.
According to Dominguez, neither commercial nor operational considerations can justify exposing sailors to such a high level of danger.
“The protection of life must remain an unconditional priority in any circumstances,” emphasized the head of IMO.
He called on all interested parties to act with maximum responsibility and once again addressed all participants in the conflict with a call to refrain from any actions that could endanger the lives of civilian sailors.
