Manila, June 10 /Xin Hua/ — At least 45 people have died, 17 are missing, and 487 sustained injuries as a result of a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that occurred on Monday near the southern coast of the Philippine island of Mindanao. This was reported on Wednesday by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

According to its data, the earthquake affected more than 33 thousand households or almost 150 thousand people, more than 41 thousand residents were forced to leave their homes. 238 infrastructure facilities were damaged, including hospitals, schools, and bridges, as well as almost 3 thousand residential buildings.

The agency added that underground tremors were felt in most of Mindanao and in some areas of the central part of the Philippines. More than 1700 aftershocks were recorded following the main earthquake. Search and rescue operations in the affected areas continue.

As stated in the council, in terms of the number of victims, population displacement, and material damage, the provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato have suffered the most, including the city of General Santos with a population of about 700 thousand people. The deaths are related to the earthquake-triggered landslides, drowning, and falling debris.

According to data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the earthquake occurred on Monday at 07:37 local time in the south of the country. The hypocenter was located at a depth of 33 km, and the epicenter was situated 32 km southwest of the coast of the city of Maasim, Sarangani province, on the island of Mindanao.
