Moscow Zoo, subordinate to the capitalDepartment of Culture, began a unique innovative project on animal behavior tracking using artificial intelligence (AI). Thanks to this technology, visitors can also find out what the inhabitants are engaged in. The information is displayed on special screens located next to the enclosures, and on interactive navigation elements located on the zoo grounds.
The project is currently operating in pilot mode and studies the behavior of three types of animals: the panda Zhui, the Dindin and Katyusha, the leopard Mizer, and the puma Gabriel. Each enclosure is equipped with several screens that provide information about the animal’s location and its current activity. Thus, visitors can find out where the inhabitant is — whether inside the enclosure or outside, and if the animal is not visible there (for example, hidden behind a bush), then a closer look is required. In addition, one can track the animal’s activity and see educational information, an event program, and other data displayed on the screen.
On the old territory of the zoo, there is also an informational stele that familiarizes visitors with the characteristic behavioral features of the animals participating in the pilot project. This information helps to build an optimal route through the zoo’s territory depending on the activity of its inhabitants.
To launch the project, extensive work was carried out: a huge data array was entered manually, with the help of which the AI learned to capture animal behavior features through video surveillance cameras. In the near future, it is planned to increase the number of studied animal action models.
In addition, a large-scale project is planned for the entire territory of the zoo, including the installation of a navigation system, as well as the integration of the project into an interactive map and onto the Moscow Zoo’s website.
