Kinshasa, June 9 /Xinhua/ — The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo /DRC/ has risen to 550, with 101 patients having died. Health authorities warn that the outbreak continues to grow.
According to updated information published on Monday, on Sunday 35 new confirmed cases of the disease were registered in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces in the east of the DRC, 10 people died. Seven more patients have recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 19.
Medics note that the trend of increasing outbreaks still persists, and the recent slight decrease in the epidemiological curve may reflect a delay in updating laboratory data rather than a real slowdown in the transmission of the infection.
As of Sunday, 309 people have been isolated or hospitalized, with 116 cases confirmed, and another 193 suspected.
The indicator of contact tracing of persons who had contact with the sick in three affected provinces is up to 64.4 percent. 5,418 people who communicated with infected persons are under observation, and another 3,489 were examined. The target indicator is still far from being reached at 95 percent.
Laboratory capacities in Northern Kivu remain limited. Due to a shortage of reagents, tests of 183 people have not yet been verified.
On May 15, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo officially announced the current outbreak caused by the Ebola-Bundibugyo virus.
The population affected in the provinces of Ituri, North and South Kivu amounts to almost 15 million people. The region witnesses massive internal and cross-border displacement of the population due to security issues. –0–
