Yanshan /prov. Shaanxi/, April 2 /Xinhua/ — Yanshan County of Shaanxi Province in northwest China is known as the homeland of the red-crowned ibis. The red-crowned ibis, known as the “bird that bestows happiness and harmony” and the “treasure of the East,” belongs to species on the brink of extinction. In 1981, exactly in the mentioned county, seven specimens of the red-crowned ibis living in the wild were discovered.Thanks to the adoption of various measures, including the restoration of nesting grounds, habitat restoration, and artificial breeding, significant successes have been achieved in Yanshan County in terms of the number and increase of the population of red-legged ibises, as well as in the improvement of local ecology and the state of the environment.
