Saint Petersburg, June 7 /Xinhua/ — In China, a successful transition from passive reaction to marine pollution to active, scientifically justified forecasting and international cooperation has taken place. This was stated in an interview with Xinhua by Tatiana Belonenko, a professor of the Department of Oceanology at Saint Petersburg State University (SPbSU), on the eve of World Oceans Day, which is observed on June 8.
According to her, especially important was China’s course on the development of the “blue economy” with simultaneous strengthening of environmental control, as well as active participation in such initiatives as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. “Within the framework of our cooperation with the laboratory in Guangzhou / Guangdong Scientific Research Laboratory of the South Seas / we have witnessed firsthand how Chinese colleagues are implementing this approach in practice,” T. Belonenko pointed out.
Chinese oceanologists are also actively developing cooperation with Russian specialists. As the expert said, “In recent years, Russian-Chinese cooperation in the field of marine ecology and environmental protection has reached a qualitatively new level, moving from episodic exchanges of opinions to systematic joint scientific research aimed at solving acute transboundary ecological problems.” Thus, in 2025, several joint publications were released, dedicated to the analysis of ecological risks in the East China Sea and the development of advanced remote sensing technologies.
Another example of successful cooperation, according to the interlocutor Sinyu, was the participation of the Chinese expert in the field of satellite oceanography in the work of the dissertation council of SPbGU in the specialty “Oceanology”.
“China’s concept in the field of marine environmental protection evokes deep respect for its systematic approach and pragmatism. China demonstrates that marine environmental protection is not an isolated national task, but a sphere for international scientific and technical partnership,” emphasized T. Belonenko.
