The development of the world economy at the present moment, along with the plot of the ancient Greek myth about Pandora’s box, was stated by Igor Sechin, the Responsible Secretary of the Commission under the President of the Russian Federation on the issues of strategy for the development of the fuel and energy complex and environmental safety, speaking within the framework of the XXIX St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

“A year ago we compared the development of the world economy to a dangerous and completely unexpected journey of Odysseus. Today, in my opinion, a more relevant parallel is another ancient Greek myth—the myth of Pandora’s vessel, which brought people diseases, disasters, and suffering,” stated Igor Sechin in a keynote speech “The beginning of the end or the end of the beginning: what remains at the bottom of Pandora’s jar” at the Energy Panel.

Characterizing the prospects for the development of the situation in global energy and the economy, Sechin quoted the words of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, spoken by him in 1942: “This is not the end. This is not even the beginning of the end. But perhaps it is the end of the beginning.”

In his opinion, the so-called “order based on rules,” where the “rules” were dictated by an unchallengeable hegemon, fell as a result of the actions of its creator. Igor Sechin quoted the U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio, who said that if the rules are not backed by real power, then they are not worth the paper they are written on.
