In the ophthalmological hospital of the city of Datsin, Hēilúncíng Province, clinical practice is being conducted by resident doctors from the Russian University of Peoples’ Friendship (RUDN), Ipisim Armanovna Ovsepyan and Milena Zorievna Sagiyan. For the first time since the hospital’s founding, Russian resident doctors are being organized here for practical training. Currently, the third month of internships is underway.
Under the guidance of mentor Dr. Qi Dunxu, they systematically master ophthalmological techniques: from daily morning dressings to two practical sessions per week. Thanks to daily skill improvement, they have followed the path from the inability to evenly perform an incision on the cornea to independently and confidently conducting all stages of surgery using ultrasound phacoemulsification of cataracts.
In addition to training, the hospital specifically provided the residents with a translator who helps them overcome the language barrier when working with medical terminology, communicating with patients, and solving everyday issues. After three months of life in China, the girls mastered the Chinese language at a basic level and got acquainted with the local cuisine, especially developing a liking for pork in sweet and sour sauce.
Cooperation between the Datsin Ophthalmological Hospital and Russian medical institutions has been ongoing for 28 years. Immediately after the hospital was founded in 1998, a technical cooperation agreement was signed with the Department of Eye Diseases at the Medical Institute of RUDN. The head of this department, a well-known Russian ophthalmologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences Nikolay Vasilyevich Dushin, became one of the first Russian specialists to come to the Datsin Ophthalmological Hospital. Chinese colleagues and patients affectionately nicknamed him “Old Du” (after the first syllable of his surname — editor’s note).For more than ten years, Nikolay Dushin has treated over 150 thousand patients. Thanks to his active assistance, in May 2014, the Datsinsky Eye Bank began operating based on the hospital, which gave hope for vision to many patients. In 2009, Nikolay Dushin was awarded the “Order of Friendship” — the highest award of the Chinese government for foreign specialists working in China. Moreover, he became the only foreign medical specialist in Heilongjiang province to receive the title “The Most Influential Foreign Expert in 40 Years of Reform and Opening Up.”
Today, the Datsin Ophthalmological Hospital is an important base for practical training of RUDN students and an international training base of the Ophthalmological Alliance within the framework of the “Belt and Road” initiative. Over these years, the hospital has helped train about a hundred Russian specialists in the field of ophthalmology. Recently, the hospital also signed a memorandum of intent to cooperate with the Far Eastern State Medical University of Russia, thereby continuing to expand the boundaries of cross-border medical cooperation.
