Almaty, June 4 /Xin Hua/ — The first nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan will generate about 19.5 billion kWh of electricity per year, providing around 20 percent of the country’s current energy consumption. This was reported on Thursday by the Kazinform news agency with reference to the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy.
As stated by the head of the Almasadam department Satkaliev, the NPP project implies operation of the station for up to 60 years with the possibility of two extensions of 20 years each, which actually forms a century-long horizon for managing the facility.
He added that the electricity will primarily be directed to the domestic market of Kazakhstan, but the possibility of participation in interstate flows within the framework of a unified energy system of the region is also being considered.
According to A. Satkaliev, the Kazakh energy sector operates within a unified energy system with neighboring countries and as part of the Central Asian energy ring, which ensures interstate electricity flows and mutual capacity reservation.
