Beijing, June 3 /Xinhua/ — Betting on the “independence of Taiwan” is hopeless and will result in Eswatini losing opportunities for its own development. This was stated on Wednesday by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, Mao Ning, at the regular departmental briefing.

According to African and Taiwanese media, before and after Lai Ching-te’s visit to Eswatini, the leadership of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party provided financing to this country in the amount of about 25 billion new Taiwanese dollars and promised that the income from the corresponding projects would fully belong to the king and the royal family. It was also noted that the corresponding benefits would be received by the representatives of Taiwan in Eswatini.

As Mao Ning pointed out, these messages once again show what the Lai Chingde administration is willing to go through for the selfish promotion of its “Taiwan independence” agenda.

The thorough “dollar diplomacy” of the Taiwanese administration cost the island’s population very dearly and was equivalent to collecting more than 1000 new Taiwanese dollars from each inhabitant of Taiwan, Mao Ning clarified. She emphasized that the presence of Eswatini as a “diplomatic ally” does not bring real benefits to the people, but serves to fill the pockets of a few who profit from it.

“This is a political spectacle, permeated with greed and corruption,” said the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mao Ning again reminded that the principle of one China is a universal international consensus and one of the basic norms of international relations. She pointed out that the Chinese side provides a zero tariff regime to all 53 African countries that have established diplomatic relations with the PRC, while Eswatini remains the only African state to have so-called “diplomatic ties” with Taiwan.

The bet on “Taiwan independence” is hopeless; it will result in Eswatini losing opportunities for its own development and will drive the country into international isolation, summarized the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC.
