Within the framework of the XXIX St. Petersburg International Economic Forum at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great, an annual discussion was held in the format of a business dinner “Evening at the Polytechnic of Peter.” The theme of this year’s event was “Resetting global energy?”

At the Political University, the future of global energy was discussed in the context of large-scale technological, economic, and geopolitical changes. The organizer of the meeting was the “Global Energy” Association.

Participants were welcomed by the rector of SPbPU, vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chairman of the Saint Petersburg branch of the RAS Andrey Rudskoy and president of the “Global Energy” Association, honorary doctor of SPbPU Sergey Brilyov, who also acted as the moderator of the discussion.

Energy is the fifth wheel of the international economy and politics. Today, many geopolitical tasks are solved through the prism of energy. Therefore, understanding the role of our country in this complex situation is crucial. We must have a common basis and a unified approach so that everyone in their professional field contributes a worthy input to the development of Russia’s economy, so that in the foreseeable future we really have the opportunity to talk about global leadership,” said Andrey Rudskoy before the start of the event.

In recent years, one of the key topics in global expert analytics has become the reassessment of the prospects for the development of the global energy sector. Recently, the existing principles of generation, distribution, and consumption of energy, as well as developing scientific, technological, and industrial trends in this area, are being reconsidered.

The global energy system is undergoing tests today comparable to the largest crises in history. The tests are so radical that, in the opinion of a number of experts, it is appropriate to speak of the collapse of the previous strategy, the “resetting” of existing international rules and norms — primarily because of the lack of a shared understanding among different countries of the causes of this crisis and possible ways to overcome it.

Changes in the global energy sector are so radical that they require an open professional conversation and a joint search for solutions. And today we are building the “business — government — science” triangle precisely in order to find these solutions within the framework of a brainstorming session,” noted Sergey Brilyov.

Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valentin Parmon, Mikhail Piotrovsky, Anton Maksimov, Stepan Kalmykov, Arutyun Avetisyan, as well as the General Director of PJSC “T Plus” Pavel Snikars, the First Deputy General Director of PJSC “Rosseti” Andrey Murov, the Rector of NIU “MEI” Nikolay Rogalyov, the Deputy General Director of PJSC “Tatneft” Azat Khabibramanov and others took part in the discussion.

Discussion participants debated whether the ongoing changes in the global energy sector are temporary or indicate the formation of a fundamentally new model of industry development. Special attention was given to issues of technological and digital sovereignty, the rapid growth of energy consumption driven by the booming development of artificial intelligence, the prospects of domestic developments in software and microelectronics, as well as the readiness of Russian science and industry to respond to new technological challenges.

During the event, the shortlist for the International Award “Global Energy” 2026 was announced. It included 15 scientists from various countries around the world, selected by independent experts based on the results of the latest nomination cycle.

The names of the laureates will be announced on July 14, 2026, in Almetyevsk as part of the Oil Summit of the Republic of Tatarstan.
