Washington, June 3 /Xin Hua/ — U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio stated on Tuesday that a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran is within reach, and Iran agreed to discuss aspects of its nuclear program.
M. Rubio made this statement during a hearing in the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
“We are currently conducting negotiations,” he said. “A prospect is opening up before us, which may happen today, it may happen tomorrow, it may happen next week. For the first time, at least as far as I remember, they agreed to discuss aspects of their nuclear program.”
According to him, a peaceful agreement may soon be reached as the first stage of negotiations, which will include Iran’s opening of the Strait of Hormuz without charging a fee for passage, removal of naval mines, and cessation of attacks on ships.
He confirmed the position of US President Donald Trump that Iran will not receive sanctions relief in exchange for opening the strait.
The second stage requires Iran to undertake the commitment to eliminate its stocks of highly enriched uranium and to agree on “strict and long-term restrictions and/or cessation of enrichment activities,” said M. Rubio, acknowledging that this could take months.
However, the comments of M. Rubio apparently contradict the messages from the Iranian and American SMIs, which state that the negotiations remain at an impasse. In the statement published on Tuesday by The Guardian, it is said that Tehran announced the suspension of peaceful negotiations and the intention to completely close the Strait of Hormuz. –0–
