Beijing, June 2 /Xinhua/ — Both shores of the Taiwan Strait belong to the same China. All Chinese on both sides of the strait bear the common responsibility to defend the territorial sovereignty, maritime rights, and interests of the country. This was stated on Tuesday by Mao Ning, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC.

A Chinese diplomat made corresponding statements at a regular briefing for journalists, commenting on the recognition by the Taiwan administration of the so-called “sea boundary delimitation negotiations” between Japan and the Philippines, which had previously announced plans to delimit the maritime area to the east of Taiwan Island.

According to Mao Nin, in accordance with China’s domestic legislation and international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Chinese side possesses an exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in the aforementioned maritime area. According to UNCLOS, the boundaries of the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf between states with opposite or adjacent coasts must be determined by agreement between the respective states based on the principle of equity.

“The Chinese side must necessarily participate in the negotiations on delimitation of the maritime area to the east of Taiwan,” noted the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As he pointed out, Japan and the Philippines unilaterally initiated the so-called “talks on delimitation of maritime boundaries,” which constitutes a serious violation of international law, including UNCLOS, and the basic norms of international relations, as well as a gross encroachment on China’s maritime rights and interests. The Chinese side will never allow this, Mao Ning emphasized.

A Chinese diplomat noted that the administration of the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, in pursuit of political gain, does not hesitate to trade the common interests of the Chinese nation, forgetting its own roots and transgressing any moral boundaries.

“This again exposes the fact that separatist forces advocating for ‘Taiwan independence’ have completely lost their national position and have turned into consummate traitors of the nation. They will inevitably be rejected with contempt by their compatriots on both sides of the strait and condemned by history,” Mao Ning concluded. –0–
