Instead of the usual box of the stage in front of the spectators, a bright Italian courtyard drenched in summer sunshine unfolds. Walls made of bleached limestone, in the center, somewhere beyond the visible limit, an invisible fountain splashes. Everywhere, from balcony to balcony, ropes are lazily stretched: here laundry is drying — sun-bleached bedsheets, tank tops, striped towels — all as if just washed by the hands of the local signora. A light breeze, carrying the exquisite aroma of jasmine and the heat of the scorching cobblestones, gently sways this idyllic scene.
It is in this summer atmosphere that heroes appear, who stand on their tight little balconies to, squinting from the morning light, look around, toss a few phrases through the narrow lane, and finally begin this new day, full of love, joy of life, and, of course, singing.
