Washington, June 2 /Xinhua/ — The United States is discussing the issue of deploying nuclear weapons in a larger number of NATO countries. This was reported by the Financial Times newspaper on Tuesday.

U.S. officials made it clear that they are ready to consider the possibility of placing nuclear weapons outside the six states where they are currently located, wrote the publication citing three people who have information about the discussion.

As Financial Times notes, six NATO allies participate in the nuclear sharing program — Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, and the United Kingdom — which have been authorized to station American dual-capable aircraft and nuclear bombs as an “advanced basing.”

The article states that the USA may allow a larger number of allies to deploy dual-purpose aircraft capable of delivering nuclear strikes. According to journalists, countries on NATO’s eastern flank, including Poland and some Baltic states, have expressed interest in establishing bases with such aviation on their territory.

Discussions through NATO channels continue, but an agreement on the expansion of the nuclear weapons base is not expected in the near future, sources told the newspaper.
