Beijing, June 1 /Xinhua/ — The international community must remain in a state of heightened vigilance to jointly prevent and stop the growth of Japanese neo-militarism. This was stated on Monday by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, Lin Xian.

At another regular departmental briefing, the Chinese diplomat responded to a journalist’s question about a recent statement by the Japanese Minister of Defense. At the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue conference, held in Singapore, the Japanese minister rejected accusations that Japan is a “neomilitaristic” country.

According to Lin Ziyan, the rhetoric of the Japanese official is absolutely untenable in the face of historical arguments, legal grounds, and facts and figures related to this issue. As emphasized by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, such a position makes it impossible for Japan to gain the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community.

Lin Ziyan reminded that Japanese militarists committed monstrous crimes during the Second World War and brought huge disasters to their Asian neighbors and the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition. To prevent the revival of Japanese militarism, international legal documents such as the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations clearly stipulated the corresponding provisions, he pointed out.

The Chinese diplomat drew attention to the fact that the Constitution of Japan also introduced strict restrictions concerning the country’s armed forces, the right to conduct hostilities, and the right to declare war, and that the Japanese authorities have enshrined the principle of an “exclusively defensive policy” at the legislative level.

Lin Ziyan regretfully notes that the international community has witnessed how Japan’s new defense budget exceeded 9 trillion yen and reached a record level for the 14th consecutive year since the end of World War II. As the Chinese diplomat pointed out, since the current Japanese government came to power, it has been trying further to go beyond the limits of international law and domestic legislation, challenging the postwar world order.

“A Japanese official deliberately bypassed the historical crimes of Japan and the facts presented above. He even tried to shift the blame onto others and confuse the issue. Is this remorse or an attempt to hide Japan’s military expansionist ambitions? In such a situation, Japan’s statements about its desire for ‘dialogue’ are purely hypocritical and do not testify to any sincere intentions,” emphasized the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Reminding that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the Tokyo Trial of Japanese war criminals, Lin Xian stated that, as noted by a number of experts and scholars from other countries, recent statements and actions by Japan have a disturbing connection with the exposed tribunal process preparing for war by Japanese militarism and thus pose a threat to peace and stability in the region.

The international community must maintain heightened vigilance in order to jointly prevent and curb the rise of Japanese neo-militarism, summarized Lin Xian.
