Kinshasa, June 1 /Sina/ — According to health authorities, as published on Sunday, five patients infected with the Ebola-Bundibugyo virus have recovered in the city of Beni, the capital of Ituri Province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo /DRC/.
A quarter of them are medical workers who were discharged on Sunday from the Ebola treatment center in Bunia after twice testing negative for Ebola. One more patient, a laboratory technician, has already returned home, the National Institute of Public Health of the DRC reported.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus attended the opening ceremony of the new Ebola treatment center in Bunyia and expressed satisfaction that the patients had recovered.
“We are still working on vaccines and treatment methods, but that does not mean that people cannot recover from Ebola,” said T. A. Gebreyesus.
These recovery cases occurred against the backdrop of the DRK activating laboratory testing and work with patients in the affected area. The Minister of Health of the DRK, Roje Kamba, stated on Saturday that at the moment there are no cases awaiting laboratory analysis, and emphasized that operational groups continue to conduct epidemiological monitoring, tracking contacts, and verifying cases of illness.
The Ministry of Health of the DRC stated on Sunday that as of May 29, there were 263 confirmed cases of Ebola registered in the country, including 42 deaths.
