San Francisco, May 30 /Xin Hua/ — A strong thunderstorm that broke out in the east of Massachusetts and other parts of the northeastern USA on Saturday afternoon was probably caused by a meteor entering the atmosphere, American media report.

About the sound of the explosion was reported at around 14:30 local time by residents of eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and other areas. The American Meteor Society stated that the incident was likely caused by a meteor about 3 feet /0.9 meters/ in diameter entering the Earth’s atmosphere near the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border.

Representatives of the Massachusetts public safety agencies stated that they received reports of a rumble and underground thud in the eastern part of the state, but there were no recorded calls to the police or fire department related to these reports. In their opinion, there is no public safety threat.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) stated that many people complained about underground shocks, but no activity was recorded on the USGS seismograph. A meteorological satellite of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also captured a flare-up over the Boston area, which apparently confirms the meteor theory.

An expert from the American Meteor Society stated that the meteor most likely burned up in the atmosphere, and if any fragments did survive, they probably fell into the ocean. There have been no reports of casualties, damage, threats, or evacuations.
