Ottawa, May 30 /Xinhua/ — China-Canada relations are picking up pace again. This was stated on Friday by the member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC Wang Yi, who arrived here on a visit, during negotiations with the Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
Van I noted that under the strategic leadership of the leaders of both countries, exchanges and cooperation in various spheres have fully resumed, and the main economic and trade issues that caused concern for both sides have been properly resolved.
He expressed hope for cooperation with Ottawa in seeking ways to develop a new strategic partnership between China and Canada, as well as for the thorough preparation of the upcoming visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to China to participate in an informal meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economic leaders to ensure strong, stable, and sustainable development of bilateral relations.
According to Van I, the ups and downs in Chinese-Canadian relations over many years have led to a crucial conclusion: both parties must strive for mutual respect, seek points of contact, put disagreements aside, safeguard strategic autonomy, and develop mutually beneficial cooperation.
He stated that the CPR is ready to work with Canada on deepening cooperation in areas such as energy, finance, and legal activities, and invites the North American country to participate in the China International Import Expo /CIIE/ as an honorary guest.
In turn, A. Anand stated that Canada attaches great importance to relations with China, firmly adheres to the principle of one China, and has set itself the goal of increasing exports to China by 50 percent by 2030.
During the negotiations, the parties agreed to create a mechanism for strategic dialogue between the foreign ministers and to resume consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on political and security issues, as well as a high-level dialogue on national security and the rule of law.
