Dushanbe, May 29 /Sina ua/ — On May 25-28, the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028 was held in the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, which once again brought together the international community to discuss critically important issues of the global water agenda.
The current conference has become a logical addition to the first three held in 2018, 2022, and 2024, continuing the long-standing Tajik tradition of providing an inclusive platform for political dialogue, exchange of opinions, partnership formation, and activation of global actions within the framework of the Dushanbe water process.
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Water, Retno Marsudi, expressed the conviction that no single government, institution, or organization is capable of overcoming the current global challenges alone. “Only through joint efforts can we achieve change,” she said.
President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, speaking at the conference, drew the international community’s attention to the urgent necessity of transitioning to a new stage of global cooperation in the water sector. According to him, currently about 4 billion people face at least a monthly period of acute water shortage annually. “This trend makes the transition to water-saving technologies, effective resource management, and better coordination of policies in the fields of water, energy, and food even more relevant,” said the head of state.
“Today, 2.2 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water services, and 3.5 billion do not have access to safe sanitation services. The pressure on water resources continues to increase. At the same time, questions about the future water agenda after 2030 and the conduct of a comprehensive final review of the International Decade for Action ‘Water for Sustainable Development’ at the 2028 UN Water Conference are being actively discussed,” said UN Deputy Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin. He emphasized that the fourth conference took place at an exceptionally timely moment for accelerating the implementation of water initiatives and contemplating the future architecture of the global water agenda.
According to the Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Kohir Rasulzoda, water resource issues are directly linked to sustainable development, economic growth, food and energy security, environmental protection, and the well-being of the population.
“Nature does not know state borders. If the ecological situation worsens in one place, the consequences gradually spread further. Therefore, we need to act together, developing projects and taking active measures,” said Serik Bekmaganbetov, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea.
Thus, at the 4th high-level water conference in Dushanbe, the international community once again confirmed its readiness to develop multifaceted cooperation and strengthen practical mechanisms in the fight against the challenges of the global water agenda for the sake of the common good. –0–
