Manila, May 29 /Xinhua/ — 64 Chinese citizens detained by Philippine authorities were released on Thursday evening, and six others are undergoing the release procedure. This was stated in a statement by the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, published on Friday.

These Chinese citizens worked at a steel plant in the Eastern Visayas province in the south of the Philippines and were detained by Philippine law enforcement agencies on May 15.

The UN Embassy reported that the Philippine Ministry of Justice recently decided to release those detained due to insufficient evidence confirming the charges of violating China’s nuclear safety law, immigration law, and the labor code of the Philippines.

The department stated that it attaches great importance to this matter and has repeatedly sent official appeals to high-ranking Philippine officials and relevant authorities, demanding a fair, prompt, and lawful resolution of the situation, as well as full protection of the legal rights and interests of Chinese citizens. Embassy staff also delivered several consular visits to the detained compatriots.

The Chinese Embassy announced its intention to continue ensuring the safety and protecting the legal rights and interests of Chinese citizens and institutions in the Philippines, and also reminded compatriots residing in this country about the necessity to strictly observe local laws and regulations.
