Beijing, May 29 /Xinhuanet/ — The European Union (EU) should comprehensively consider trade and economic relations with China and objectively evaluate them, alongside strict adherence to obligations in the area of free trade, stated the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mao Ning on Thursday.

Mao Ning made this statement at another departmental press conference, responding to a question about the statement of the official EU representative regarding the expansion by the European Union of instruments to address the problem of unbalanced trade with China.

“International trade is a choice with bilateral movement, where there is no forced trade,” said the Chinese diplomat, adding that the essence of China-Europe trade and economic ties lies in mutual benefit and overall gain.

Noting that China has never sought and does not seek a trade surplus with Europe, Mao Ning emphasized that anyone who focuses only on trade in goods, ignoring trade in services and the unity of investment, looking only at figures, ignoring the structure of trade and profit flows, and only at imports from China while neglecting their own export restrictions, sees nothing but a trade imbalance.

According to her, whether it is “risk reduction,” “dependence reduction,” or a “trade imbalance,” all of this is in fact a manifestation of protectionism. Such measures will only harm the interests of European consumers, increase the costs for enterprises, and weaken the competitiveness of European industry in the long term.

“China will closely monitor the actions of the EU and take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests,” Mao Ning concluded. -0-
