Beijing, May 29 /Xinhua/ — China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Thursday called for continued regulation of the recycling of used batteries for new energy vehicles (NEV) through legal means, since China is currently entering a stage of mass retirement of used NEV batteries from service.

At the meeting of the special working group on the disposal of NEV batteries, a requirement was voiced to thoroughly investigate and punish illegal activities, including unauthorized disposal of battery units that have expired their service life, use of batteries with expired warranty periods for the production of substandard products, failure to fulfill obligations for tracking information, illegal dismantling leading to environmental pollution, and economic activities without a license.

According to the ministry’s estimates, the annual volume of retired battery packs for NEVs will exceed 1 million tons by 2030. Meeting participants emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the creation and improvement of the disposal system for used batteries.

Digital technologies will be used to enhance the monitoring of battery pack flows and to ensure the fulfillment of responsibilities within the main accountability of enterprises at all stages of the production and sales chain, the ministry reported.

The ministry also called for deeper cooperation between industry associations, key enterprises, research institutions, and other parties to accelerate the development and application of advanced technologies and equipment, study new business models, and create a solid foundation for high-quality industry development. -0-
