New York, May 27 /Xinhua/ — The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean basin have the right to independently choose partners for development. This was stated here on Wednesday by a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a meeting with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, Shon Sobers.

According to Van I, the two countries are connected by a deep friendship. The KNLR is ready to strengthen contacts, build mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation in trade and other spheres, as well as significantly promote humanitarian and cultural exchanges with Trinidad and Tobago, he noted.

Beijing highly values Port of Spain’s adherence to the One China principle and supports Trinidad and Tobago’s choice of its own development path, added Wan Yi.

In turn, Sh. Sobers stated that most countries of Latin America and the Caribbean Basin advocate for exchanges and cooperation with China. According to him, no third party will be able to negatively affect either the relations between Trinidad and Tobago and China, or the ties between Latin America and China.

Port of Spain is firmly committed to developing relations with Beijing and consistently regards China as a good friend, said Sh. Sobers, adding that the country steadfastly adheres to the One-China policy and values the CARICOM support in defending its sovereignty and security.

Currently, bilateral relations are developing dynamically, and in practical cooperation, a prosperous progress is observed, emphasized the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He expressed hope for further strengthening of contacts and coordination between the two sides on the UN platform.
