China and Cambodia Foreign Ministers Agree to Develop Bilateral Relations

New York, May 27 /Xinhua/ — Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia Prak Sokhonn met on Wednesday in New York and agreed to develop bilateral relations.

Chinese-Cambodian relations are gaining momentum, noted Van I. According to him, the transformation of the strategic dialogue mechanism in the format “2+2” with the participation of foreign ministers and defense ministers into a “3+3” mechanism, which will also include public security agencies, is a demonstration of high-level mutual trust between the two countries and will contribute to further development.

China is ready to deepen the comprehensive strategic cooperation with Cambodia, conduct closer exchanges at a high level, promote pragmatic cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy, legal activities and connectivity, as well as strengthen multilateral coordination to facilitate the creation of an all-weather China-Cambodia community with a shared future in the new era, said Wang Yi.

Mr. Sokon stated that Cambodia adheres to the one-China principle, supports the reunification of China, and opposes any form of “Taiwan independence,” emphasizing that the country’s position remains unwavering.

According to him, under the strategic leadership of the leaders of the two countries, Cambodia is ready to cooperate with China in order to promote closer exchanges at a high level and accelerate the alignment of development strategies to achieve even greater results in creating the Cambodia-China community with a shared future.

Van I and P. Sok also exchanged views on the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

Van I noted that the dialogue and consultations between Cambodia and Thailand yielded positive results. Being a common friend of both countries, China supports the parties in continuing the dialogue and is ready to play a positive role in helping them strengthen mutual trust and improve relations, he added.

Mr. Sok informed the interlocutor of his country’s position on this issue and thanked China for its constructive mediation efforts. Cambodia is ready to reduce disagreements with Thailand through dialogue and work on normalizing bilateral relations; the country counts on further support from China, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized. –0–
