Cotonou, May 25 /Xinhua/ — Romuald Wadagni, elected president of Benin in the April 12 elections, was sworn in here on Sunday at the Palace of Congresses.

The ceremony was attended by more than 6,000 guests, including heads of state institutions, members of constitutional bodies, former presidents Nisephor Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, as well as members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Benin.

Before the Constitutional Court, the new head of state swore to serve Benin and protect it during his seven-year constitutional term of office.

D. Vadanji promised to respect and protect the Constitution, conscientiously fulfill the high duties entrusted to him by the people, and devote all his efforts to promoting the common good, peace, and national unity.

He also swore to defend the territorial integrity of the country and always be a faithful and devoted servant of the people.
