UN, May 23 /Xinhua/ — The UN Permanent Representative Fu Cun on Friday called on the parties to the conflict in Ukraine to stop attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Beijing has taken note of the report on the strike by a drone on a college in Starobilsk and expresses deep concern about the death of people, especially students, he said at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine. “China condemns any attacks on civilians,” the diplomat added.
The protracted Ukrainian crisis exacerbates the situation on the battlefield and causes immense suffering to people, which no party, including China, wishes for, Fu Chun emphasized.
Recently, the parties to the conflict have often carried out large-scale strikes using drones and missiles, endangering increasingly more residential areas, educational institutions, and civilian infrastructure. This is a very alarming situation, noted the post representative.
“We call on the parties to maintain calm and exercise restraint, strictly adhere to international humanitarian law, effectively protect the civilian population, cease attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, urgently de-escalate the situation on the battlefield, and strive for the earliest possible return to peace,” he said.
The Ukrainian issue is at a critical stage of dialogue and negotiations, the diplomat noted. According to him, “the respective parties must double their efforts, demonstrate political will, show flexibility, take seriously the legitimate concerns of each other in the security sphere, and properly regulate them, as well as strive for the earliest possible achievement of a comprehensive, strong, and binding peace agreement.”
The position of the NPC on the Ukrainian issue is objective, impartial, and consistent, emphasized Fu Cun. China has always stood on the side of peace, dialogue, and humanity; it firmly supports the cessation of conflict and the achievement of a political solution and is making significant efforts to promote peace negotiations, the ambassador stated. Beijing, together with the international community, is ready to continue playing a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis, the diplomat added.
Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vasily Nebenzya informed the Security Council that as a result of the strike by a Ukrainian drone on a student dormitory on Friday, six people were killed and another 40 were injured.
