Los Angeles, May 22 /Xinhua/ — On Friday, about 40 thousand residents of Southern California received an evacuation order due to a leak from a reservoir containing volatile industrial chemicals at an aerospace manufacturing plant. The incident raised concerns about a major explosion or toxic substance spill, local authorities reported.
According to authorities, the leak occurred on Thursday afternoon at an enterprise in the city of Garden Grove, Orange County. From the overheated reservoir for methyl methacrylate — a flammable chemical substance used in the production of acrylic plastics — dangerous vapors began to be emitted.
Officials reported that the site, operated by the company GKN Aerospace, has a total of three reservoirs for cooling, one of which experienced a cooling system failure. Emergency crews initially believed that overnight they managed to stabilize the situation. However, on Friday the situation worsened, and authorities decided to expand the evacuation zone. Schools were closed in several cities, and emergency response measures were implemented.
Residents of the city of Garden Grove and nearby settlements received an evacuation order because emergency services warned of the threat of an explosion or leakage from a damaged reservoir. –0–
