New York, May 22 /Xin Hua/ — On Friday, at least 16 people were injured as a result of an explosion and fire at a shipyard on Staten Island in New York. This was reported by local authorities.
According to data from the New York fire department, two firefighters and one civilian sustained serious injuries. In addition, 11 more firefighters and two paramedics were injured.
At about 15:30 Eastern Time, a message was received about workers trapped in a confined space, the city’s fire department reported, adding that a powerful explosion occurred at around 16:20.
“Delays in traffic, road closures, disruptions in public transport service, and the presence of emergency services in the Richmond-Terras and Mercer Avenue area on Staten Island are expected. Please use alternative routes,” the official message from the city’s emergency alert system on social network X says.
