Geneva, May 23 /Xin Hua/ — The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Friday that the total number of confirmed cases of monkeypox virus infection has risen to 12. All of them are linked to an outbreak on board the cruise liner MV Hondius — approx. Xin Hua.
At a briefing for journalists, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the Netherlands has confirmed another case of illness. This concerns a crew member who disembarked on the shore on the island of Tenerife /Spain/, was repatriated to the Netherlands and has been in self-isolation ever since.
Currently, 12 cases of the disease and three deaths have been registered. As reported by T. A. Gebreyesus, on May 2, when the WHO first received a report of an outbreak of the disease, no new fatal cases had been registered.
“We continue to urge the affected countries to carefully monitor all passengers and crew members until the end of the quarantine period,” noted T. A. Gebreyesus.
In 30 countries, monitoring continues for more than 600 individuals who have had contact with infected persons. A small number of contacts from high-risk groups is still being established.
The head of VOZ once again thanked the countries that assisted in adopting countermeasures and conducting epidemiological investigations. –0–
