Vienna, May 22 /Xinhua/ — Austria and Hungary on Thursday agreed to deepen cooperation within the framework of the European Union (EU). This was announced during the visit of Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Márky to Austria, where he held talks with Austrian Chancellor Christian Strache.

According to the Austrian Press Agency /APA/, the leaders of both countries characterized the recent political changes in Budapest as the beginning of a “new chapter” in bilateral relations and agreed to hold a joint government meeting at the end of the year.

Speaking at a joint press conference, K. Shtoker stated that Austria and Hungary are striving for a rapid expansion of cooperation and the launch of joint projects in the field, which represents a common interest.

P. Madjar noted that relations between the two neighboring countries have entered a “more peaceful phase,” characterized by mutual support. He also again made a proposal for Austria to join the Visegrad Group — a regional alliance that currently includes Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.

According to K. Stoker, any decision on expanding the group must be agreed upon with its current members and cannot be made by Austria alone.

During the negotiations, the leaders of the two countries also discussed issues such as combating climate change, EU enlargement, and migration.
