UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the decision of the Israeli authorities to place a military site on the territory of the BAPOR complex in the Sheikh Jarrah area of East Jerusalem. The complex was seized by the authorities in January.
UNRWA – the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees – is an integral part of the UN system, and its complex in Sheikh Jarrah remains a UN premises, the statement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary-General’s press service noted.
These “unprecedented measures,” emphasized Guterres, constitute a violation of the inviolability principle of United Nations premises.
“They are creating obstacles to the fulfillment of the General Assembly’s mandate, which clearly provides for the continuation of UNRWA’s activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem,” the statement says.
The Secretary-General regrets that the Israeli authorities continue to take steps that violate their obligations concerning the privileges and immunities of the United Nations.
“As confirmed by the International Court, such actions are illegal. The State of Israel has no right to exercise sovereign authority over any part of the occupied Palestinian territory and is obliged to end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, as soon as possible,” stated Guterres.
The Secretary-General called on the Government of Israel to cancel its decision and immediately return the United Nations complex BAPOR in Sheikh Jarrah.
