A delegation from the Academy of Sciences of Asia (ANA) paid an official visit to the Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great.
In recent years, the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia has activated interaction with Russian scientific organizations. In April 2026, there was a meeting between the president of the ANA Zurab Dzhapua and the deputy president of the Russian Academy of Sciences Petrom Chekmarëv, at which the prospects of cooperation between the Abkhazian and Russian academic structures were discussed.
Developing the achieved agreements, a delegation arrived at the Polytechnic University headed by the president of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia, Doctor of Philological Sciences, foreign member of the RAS, Professor Zurab Dzhapu. The Abkhazian delegation included the first vice-president of the ANA, academician, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Sergey Bebia, as well as the academic secretary of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the ANA, Doctor of Technical Sciences, director of the Sukhum Physical-Technical Institute, Professor Anatoly Markolia.
A colleague from Central Asia was Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Chairman of the Saint Petersburg branch of the RAS, Rector of SPbPU Andrey Rudskoy. The participants of the meeting discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation and signed an agreement on scientific and educational cooperation between the Central Asian Academy of Sciences and SPbPU.
Greeting the guests, Andrey Rudskoy emphasized: The Polytechnic University historically trained encyclopedists of the highest level — engineers who combined deep technical knowledge with an understanding of economics and law. In the 19th century, occupations were related to the three languages. He is confident that our agreement will allow us to pass on this unique tradition and jointly train specialists capable of working at the intersection of science, technology, and production.
The signed agreement opens new opportunities for joint fundamental research in the fields of physical and technical sciences, medical primatology, ecology, subtropical agriculture, as well as humanitarian disciplines and Caucasology. The parties expressed interest in organizing joint expeditions, conferences, publications, as well as internships for young scientists and graduate students of the ANA at the SPbU RAS Institute.
Polytech is a unique environment where physics and poetry meet at the same table. Our Academy has three departments: natural sciences, technical, and humanitarian. And we see huge potential in collaboration and in Caucasus studies, in biomedicine, and in supercomputing technologies,” noted Zurab Dzhapua.
A tour was conducted for the guests around the main academic building of SPbPU, during which they visited the gallery of portraits of outstanding politicians, the White Hall, and the Museum of SPbPU History. The delegation also visited the Scientific Research Complex “Technopolis Polytech,” where they got acquainted with the work of the Supercomputer Center and the laboratory of lightweight materials and structures of the Scientific and Educational Center “Structural and Functional Materials.”
The visit of the delegation of the Academy of Sciences of Asia strengthened scientific and academic ties between Russia and Asia, becoming an important stage in the formation of a unified scientific and technological space of our countries.
