Washington, May 20 /Xin Hua/ — The United States has reduced the number of brigade combat teams deployed in Europe from four to three, returning to the 2021 level. The Pentagon reported this on Tuesday.
This decision will lead to a delay in the redeployment of American forces to Poland, the US Department of Defense statement notes, in which Poland is called a “model US ally.”
It is reported that the Pentagon will determine the final configuration of these and other American forces in Europe, “based on further analysis of the strategic and operational needs of the United States, as well as the ability of our allies themselves to contribute to the defense of Europe.”
The US Department of Defense statement notes that this analysis is intended to assist in the implementation of President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ program by encouraging NATO allies to take on the primary responsibility for Europe’s defense using conventional weapons.
According to the statement, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth held a phone conversation on Tuesday with Poland’s Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, in which he emphasized the United States’ readiness to support a military presence in the country.
“Poland has demonstrated the ability and determination to defend itself independently. Other NATO allies must follow its example,” the statement says.
