Beijing, May 18 /Xinhua/ — China’s position regarding the participation of the Chinese region of Taiwan in the activities of international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), is consistent and clear. This was stated on Monday by an official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC.
An official representative made a corresponding statement, commenting on the decisions made on Monday by the General Committee and the plenary session of the 79th World Health Assembly /WHO/ not to include on the agenda a proposal from certain countries regarding the “invitation of Taiwan to participate in the session as an observer.”
As noted by the Chinese diplomat, for the tenth consecutive year, the UN has rejected a similar proposal concerning Taiwan.
He emphasized that the participation of the Chinese region of Taiwan in the activities of international organizations must be carried out in strict accordance with the principle of one China, which is also the fundamental principle affirmed by UN General Assembly resolution 2758 and WHO resolution 25.1. The Chinese region of Taiwan has neither grounds, reasons, nor the right to participate in WHO sessions without the permission of the central government of China, added the official representative.
According to him, the stubborn separatist position of the Democratic Progressive Party /DPP/ administration of Taiwan has led to the disappearance of the political basis for the participation of the Taiwan region in the work of the WCO.
At the same time, the official representative noted that the central government of China pays increased attention to the health and well-being of compatriots in Taiwan. The central government has taken appropriate measures that ensure the participation of the Taiwan region in global health affairs under the condition of adhering to the one-China principle. Thus, Taiwanese specialists in the fields of medicine and healthcare are given the opportunity to participate in WHO technical meetings.
Over the past year, the Chinese diplomat continued, the central government of China has approved applications for the participation of a total of 18 Taiwanese medical and technical experts in WHO technical events on various specialized topics, including immunological strategies, vaccine development, mental health, and digital healthcare.
Within the framework of the International Health Regulations, the Taiwanese region enjoys unhindered and full-scale access to data exchange mechanisms with the WHO and all countries of the world, can receive operational access to WHO information related to emergency situations in the field of health, and notify the WHO about such situations, stated an official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He also reminded that there is uninterrupted information exchange about epidemics of infectious diseases between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait, and the parties conduct such activities as forums of hospital directors. This fully demonstrates that the central government of China sincerely resolves health care issues that concern Taiwanese compatriots, that Taiwan has full and unobstructed channels for communication and cooperation within the framework of WHO technical work, and that the health care rights of Taiwan residents should be properly protected, the Chinese diplomat stated.
As the official representative indicated, unlike the political manipulations of a small number of countries that create noise about Taiwan’s participation in the WHO, the proper measures and real steps taken by the central government of China indeed have significance for the well-being and prosperity of Taiwanese compatriots, while the so-called “break” in global anti-epidemic efforts is nothing more than politically motivated falsehood.
The administration of the DPR and certain countries are openly trying to turn back the wheel of history, deliberately distorting and disputing UN GA Resolution 2758 in an attempt to challenge the One-China principle, a Chinese diplomat said. Essentially, he noted, these are attempts to challenge not only China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity but also international justice and the general international consensus.
According to the official representative, China’s decision not to approve the participation of the Taiwan region in this year’s UN session has found wide support and understanding in the international community. The overwhelming majority of countries around the world have again confirmed that they support UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, firmly adhere to the One China principle, and oppose Taiwan’s participation in the work of the UN.
They expressed their support for China’s position in various ways, including sending a letter to the WHO Director-General.
“This proves that adherence to the One-China principle is a common aspiration of the people, a mandate of the times, and a supreme truth. Adherence to the One-China principle by the international community is indisputable and unshakable,” emphasized the official representative.
As he noted, regardless of what the DPP administration says or does, this does not change the fact that both shores of the Taiwan Strait belong to the same China and Taiwan is an inseparable part of it. This also will not stop the trend toward the final and inevitable reunification of China.
“Taiwan’s independence” is a path to nowhere, and any provocations aimed at achieving it are doomed to inevitable failure, concluded an official representative of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
