On Monday, May 18 /Xinyu/ — Three people died and another four remain missing after sudden floods caused a river to overflow and a village to be flooded in the lowland area of Xuan’en County /Hubei Province, Central China/. Local authorities reported this on Monday.

From Sunday to Monday, heavy rainstorms hit the basin of the Yushui River in the Suianen Enshi-Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture, causing sudden floods. As a result, the river overflowed its banks and flooded the village of Baishuixie, located in the lowlands. In two days, the amount of precipitation in one of the districts upstream reached 253.4 mm.

The permanent population of the village is 800 people. After flooding began early Monday morning, local authorities organized an evacuation. In total, 287 villagers from 185 households were evacuated for safety reasons.

In the disaster area, automobile communication, telecommunications, and electricity supply were disrupted.

More than 200 rescuers were sent to the village, including police officers, employees of emergency management agencies, firefighters, and power supply workers, who are equipped with satellite phones, kayaks, and other emergency rescue equipment.

More than 150 people reached the site of the incident, having overcome a multi-kilometer path on foot from a neighboring village, to provide assistance in the rescue operations.

Since 07:00 on Sunday, heavy rains also fell on Shimen County in Hunan Province / Central China /. According to local authorities, as of Monday evening, one person died and two went missing due to the disaster.

The administration of Shimian County has begun evacuation, rescue operations, and infrastructure restoration. A total of 18,406 residents have been relocated.
