Beijing, April 3 /Xin Hua/ — On Friday, China announced a mandatory national safety standard for external portable batteries, aimed at comprehensively improving the safety level of portable energy storage devices.
The new standard, which will come into effect on April 1, 2027, introduces a number of strict requirements. It prescribes enhanced safety measures for external charging devices in cases of improper use or extreme conditions, in particular, at high temperatures, during recharging, and compression.
Testing for lithium plating after cyclic aging has been added to the above-mentioned document to reduce the risk of internal short circuit during prolonged operation of the portable charging device.
In addition, devices must be equipped with functions for damage and malfunction detection. Each device must also have a unique identification code that allows consumers to obtain basic information, such as the battery brand.
After the standard comes into force, consumers will be able to continue owning and using previously purchased external batteries that comply with the standard’s requirements and have a valid mandatory certification from China.
It is expected that this standard, developed by the Ministry of Industry and Informatization of the PRC, will contribute to the further regulation of the market, stimulate technological modernization in the industry, as well as promote more effective protection of safety and consumer rights.
