Moscow, May 15 /Xinhua/ — The relations between China and Russia have become a model of interaction between large neighboring powers. They possess strong internal dynamics and strategic resilience. This was stated by the Chinese Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Zhang Hanhui, in an interview published on Thursday by the Russian news internet portal VFocus Mail.
“Chinese-Russian relations have become a model of interaction between major neighboring powers, possessing strong internal dynamics and sustainable strategic resilience,” he said.
As noted by the Chinese diplomat, for more than 70 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, bilateral relations have undergone an impressive path of development. In 2019, the heads of the two states signed a joint statement and officially announced the advancement of bilateral relations to the level of a comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction for a new era.”This marked the beginning of bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, humanitarian spheres and in international affairs at a new stage of comprehensive development and its transition to a trajectory of qualitative growth and raising the level,” noted the ambassador.
Zhan Hanxue emphasized that at present, China-Russia relations are experiencing the best period in their history while maintaining high growth dynamics, which serves as a solid political foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation in all areas. “Bilateral cooperation is developing in all directions, yielding fruitful results and continuously reaching new heights,” he added.
The Chinese ambassador drew attention to the fact that despite unfavorable factors in global development, practical Chinese-Russian cooperation continues to demonstrate a favorable trend towards stable growth in volumes with improved quality. According to preliminary statistics, for January-April 2026, bilateral trade turnover reached 85.241 billion dollars, increasing by 19.7% year-on-year, which, according to the diplomat, once again confirms a solid foundation and enormous potential for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Zhan Hanzhuo indicated that as permanent members of the UN Security Council and responsible global powers, China and Russia bear important responsibility and mission in maintaining global strategic stability and promoting the development of the world in a fairer and more rational direction. He assured that Sino-Russian relations are built on the principles of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and non-targeting of third parties, which not only meets the fundamental interests of both states, but also serves as a foundation for maintaining peace and stability, defending international justice.
“Both countries defend the international system, with the UN at its core, adhere to the goals and principles of the UN Charter, and are a key force in countering hegemonism, promoting multipolarity, and stabilizing the global situation,” the diplomat stated, adding that the sides maintain close contacts and coordination in multilateral formats such as the SCO, BRICS, and the “Group of Twenty,” as well as advocate for the legal rights of Global South countries’ development, jointly promoting the building of a more just and rational system of global governance.
The Chinese ambassador reminded that the President of Russia Vladimir Putin has repeatedly given positive assessments of the Chinese concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, the Initiative on Global Development, the Initiative on Global Security, and the Global Civilization Initiative. “In September of last year, Chairman of the CPC Xi Jinping put forward the Initiative on Global Governance at the SCO summit in Tianjin. President of the Russian Federation V. Putin immediately expressed full support for the initiative, subsequently repeatedly confirming it at various venues,” added Zhang Hanhui.
The diplomat also highly appreciated the development of bilateral humanitarian exchanges, noting that the visa-free regime between China and Russia has been successfully implemented in practice, which has significantly simplified mutual travel for citizens of the two countries.
Zhang Hanhui reminded that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-Russia partnership relations and strategic interaction, the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between China and Russia, as well as the launch of the Years of China and Russia. He expressed confidence that the new state thematic years will create favorable conditions for the further expansion of mutual student exchange, deepening of educational and humanitarian cooperation, strengthening of mutual understanding and closeness between the peoples of the two countries, and will contribute to the transmission of Chinese-Russian neighborly friendship from generation to generation.
“The Chinese side is ready, together with the Russian side, to promote joint education, joint scientific research, and joint management, to assist in elevating China-Russia educational cooperation to a new qualitative level, infusing vital force and inexhaustible dynamics into the development of China-Russia relations as a comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction in a new era,” concluded the Ambassador of the PRC to the Russian Federation.
