What is needed to prepare future engineer-managers and how should universities respond to the current challenges of the labor market? These and other questions were discussed at a meeting of the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Club at the State University of Management, timed to coincide with the 146th anniversary of the university.

The club members are graduates and partners of the first management who have achieved success in various fields of activity: from public administration and implementation of social projects to their own business and leadership in the country’s largest companies.

The discussion was opened by the rector of GUU Vladimir Stroev, who reminded those gathered about the important areas of the university’s development.

“Sergo Ordzhonikidze is connected not only with the history of the university but also with our entire state. He made a significant contribution to the fate of the country, actively participated in the formation and development of the USSR, our university officially bore his name for many years and continues to be firmly associated with him, and a bust of Sergo Ordzhonikidze has been installed in the main educational building to visually reinforce this connection.””Today it is especially important to discuss the future of engineering and economic personnel, those issues that the founders of the university laid the foundation for in engineering and economic education, which we are actively reviving,” noted the rector.

The meeting moderator, advisor to the rectorate of GUU Sergey Chuev, outlined the main directions of the upcoming discussion and suggested that participants share their views on changes in the education system, the state of the labor market, and ways to train in-demand specialists to ensure the development of the country’s economy.

Deputy General Director of ANO “National Priorities” Roman Kamaev emphasized in his speech the practical significance of national projects and their impact on all spheres of life.

“National projects not only set a task, but also form the correct demand for the competencies of their own tools. Today, human capital is a key factor of success. Laboratories can be equipped with the latest equipment, but without qualified specialists, this will not yield results.”

The Deputy Head of Rospotrebnadzor, GUE graduate Evgeny Semchenko, shared his personal experience in building a career and suggested thinking about long-term professional orientation work.

“I have worked in education my whole life; this love was instilled even at university. We all understand that education is a special sphere, any careless decision in which will have serious long-term consequences. HSE should focus on challenges that do not yet exist, but will begin to emerge in 5-7 years. I suggest developing career guidance work for 10–15 years ahead. Perhaps it is worth considering the opening of secondary specialized education based at HSE.”

The Vice-President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, head of the Department of Health Management at PSU, Viktor Cherepov noted the shortage of managers in medicine and the leading role of our university in training such leaders.

“At GUBB 20 years ago, they already understood that managing requires special skills regardless of the field, and an excellent practicing doctor cannot always be a good administrator. And they created a corresponding department where specialists are trained, ready to immediately join the workforce. Our department graduates have never had problems with employment. Gradually, GUBB’s experience in this field is spreading to the regions.”

Vice-President of GK “Novard”, a graduate of GUU, Sergey Sarkisov told about the personnel challenges in entrepreneurship and business.

“We operate in the consumer segment. This industry is very sensitive to changes, and the labor market has often changed in recent years, especially after the exit of foreign companies and the growth of online trade. However, today the market has calmed down and stabilized, and people are looking for stable positions with growth potential. Universities can help here, for example, by creating a specialized department for the training of engineer-managers.”

Also, in the discussion of the development of training for future managers, participated Vice-Rector of GUU Dmitry Bryukanov and Vitaly Lapshenkov, Advisor to the Director of VDC “Ocean” Andrey Bazilevskiy, Responsible Secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS, GUU graduate Sergey Pospelov, Head of Personnel of PO “Forenergo” Elizaveta Bondarenko, General Director of the Russian House of International Scientific and Technical Cooperation (RD MNTs) Dmitry Protasovsky, and Deputy Head of the Center for International Projects and Initiatives of RD MNTs Svetlana Shevereva.

As a result of the meeting, it was decided to create a list of proposals and consider the possibility of their application after a more detailed discussion.

After the meeting concluded, the Club members proceeded to the Solemn Ceremony of awarding the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Prize, established at GUU in 2024.
