At the invitation of the Chinese side, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon will visit China from May 11 to 14 on a state visit. This visit is the first visit of the head of a foreign state to China after the May 1 holiday, and it attracts great attention.
For 34 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Tajikistan have consistently adhered to the principles of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit. In July 2024, the two countries decided to elevate bilateral relations to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership in a new era, both sides committed to building a China-Tajikistan community with a shared future. Tajikistan became the first country in the world to sign with China a memorandum on joint cooperation within the framework of the “Economic Belt of the Silk Road” projects. The current visit of President Emomali Rahmon to China reflects the great importance that Tajikistan attaches to the development of relations with China.
Pragmatic cooperation has always been a solid basis of Chinese-Tajik relations. Thanks to the synergy of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative with Tajikistan’s National Development Strategy until 2030, important breakthroughs have been achieved in the field of connectivity. The construction of the second phase of the Chinese-Tajik highway and the arrival in February 2026 in Dushanbe of the first pilot container train with multimodal transportation help Tajikistan transform from a “landlocked country” into a “country connected to the world by transit routes.”Built with the assistance of Chinese enterprises, Dushanbe TPP-2 has completely solved the problem of electricity supply limitations in the capital of Tajikistan during the winter period. China has become the largest source of investment and the main trade partner of Tajikistan. In the first quarter of 2026, bilateral trade turnover increased by more than 50% compared to the same period last year, and cooperation is expanding into new areas such as green energy and the digital economy.
Safe cooperation and humanitarian exchanges are two pillars of Chinese-Tajik relations. Tajikistan, located at the crossroads connecting East, South, and Central Asia, is an important neighbor of Afghanistan and plays a key role in maintaining regional stability and combating the “three forces of evil.” Close interaction between China and Tajikistan ensures the security of both countries and supports stability throughout Central Asia. The first “Lu Bathhouse Workshop” in Central Asia opened in Dushanbe, and events such as the Confucius Institutes and Culture Days constantly strengthen the friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
The Chinese-Tajik cooperation serves as a positive example of regional multilateral interaction. Firstly, it contributes to regional economic integration through interconnected development. Secondly, by giving equal attention to security and development, it strengthens the internal dynamics of regional stability. Thirdly, it forms an open and inclusive framework basis for cooperation, which serves as a useful supplement to multilateral mechanisms.
The significance of Chinese-Tajik cooperation goes far beyond the bilateral level. In today’s complex international environment, this model of relations, oriented towards development and based on cooperation, has important practical significance and long-term value. Deepening Chinese-Tajik relations encompassing a strategic partnership in the new era will bring greater certainty and stability to Central Asia and serve as a strong example for building a community with a shared future for Central Asia.
