Jerusalem, May 14 /Xinhua/ — The chairman of the ruling coalition in the Knesset (the country’s parliament), Ofir Katz, on Wednesday presented a bill on the dissolution of parliament, which could pave the way for early elections.

The bill was supported by the heads of all coalition factions. According to the document, a copy of which was reviewed by the Cyprus agency, the date of early elections will be determined through discussion in the Knesset committee.

The ruling coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, considered the most right-wing government in the history of Israel, was sworn in in December 2022. The next elections are scheduled for October 2026, however, the proposed bill provides for the early termination of the government’s powers.

B. Netanyahu’s coalition faced widespread public criticism, including weekly demonstrations demanding his resignation due to corruption charges, as well as because of his government’s inability to prevent the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which resulted in about 1,200 deaths.
